Now this is where first impression theories get really fascinating. Behavior analysts study how we learn to create an initial opinion of someone but also the actions we take after we have developed those thoughts.
The most common form of expressed first impressions is in the work place. For instance, Johnny got that awesome job because his employers really liked him. Then, over time, he continued the appropriate behaviors and received that big promotion. So somewhere down the line, Johnny learned how to successfully interview for employment and due to his ability to maintain his learned behaviors he became victorious.
Wouldn’t this be amazing if it worked that way in real life? Wave a magic subconscious wand and make great first impressions.
Getting to it
So if you haven’t caught the gist of this (which means you didn’t read my blog), first impressions are a significant source of the unknown. There’s no way to place a finger on what exactly causes that instant connection with others or the awkward feelings we get around creepy dudes. Some could argue its one personality feeling the other out, kind of like dueling for liking or disliking a person and only one will survive. Or we could side with the biological response of chemical reactions and blame it on the hormones.
No matter what you chose to believe causes an instant reaction to other individuals, the fact that it occurs is undeniable. Therefore if you only take one thing away from this, make it my amazing first impression.
