There are two distinct historical periods of the KKK, the first was during the Restoration period but they this first organization slowly disappeared. The second period starts up again in 1915 and was started by William J. Simmons. This second group was not only racist but anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish.
The basic underlying ideas of the KKK is white, Anglo Saxon and Protestant. Some fundamentalist Protestant ministers are active members and leaders in the KKK today. To be a member you must swear to be American born, white and a christian.
All you have to do is look on their web sites to see that the KKK is based on race and their idea of the Christian religion.
