THE BIRTH AND EVOLUTION OF WW 3 ..... The U.N. was founded in 1945 after World War II by 51 countries committed to preserving peace through international cooperation and collective security. President Franklin Roosevelt coined the phrase "United Nations," which was used for the first time in the "Declaration by United Nations" on Jan. 1, 1942, when representatives of 26 nations pledged to continue fighting the Axis Powers.
ReplyDeleteThe U.N. succeeded the League of Nations, an organization conceived during WWI and established in 1919 "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." The League ended after failing to prevent World War II.
Today, nearly every country — 193 out of 196 — is a U.N. member. Non-members are: Taiwan, Vatican City and Kosovo, which hasn't gained full international recognition yet after declaring independence from Serbia in 2008.
