    imprisoned for “looking gay.”

CONFIRMED: The convictions were overturned this week

CNN reports that Jonas Kimie and Franky Ndome were acquitted after spending 13 months of a five-year sentence for being homosexual. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Cameroon, and sentences range from six months to five years.

Kimie and Ndome were arrested outside a nightclub in November 2011 because they wore women’s clothing and drank Bailey’s Irish Cream, their lawyer, Alice N'Kom, told global gay-rights group All Out. N’Kom said authorities never witnessed his clients engaging in homosexual acts so the conviction was based on stereotypes.

According to a CBS News report, Kimie and Ndome were subjected to abuse from guards and other prisoners.

Amnesty International applauded the decision but also condemned Cameroon’s “systematic discrimination against perceived homosexuals in the country.” (Read Amnesty’s statement here.)

    Cameroon student still in prison

Last month, a Cameroon appeals court upheld the three-year sentence of a university student, Roger Mbede, who was convicted of homosexuality after texting his male friend to say, “I’m very much in love with you,” the CNN report said. The decision prompted All Out to launch a “Cameroon: Free Roger” petition, which has brought in more than 120,000 signatures. (Read the petition here.)

    Is change coming?

Homosexuality is illegal in most African countries, where sodomy laws were introduced during colonialism. But in November 2012, Malawi suspended its anti-gay laws, CNN reported through an Amnesty International statement. Same-sex relationships carry a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Uganda is prepared to toughen its anti-gay laws even further, CNN reported in November 2012. Currently, homosexual acts in Uganda are punishable by 14 years to life in prison.
